How can coaching help a first time manager?
Making the transition from being an individual contributor to a manager is not an easy one. Ram Charan in his book "The Leadership Pipeline" talks about the 6 transitions that leaders make in their lifetime and this first one is described as being the hardest.
Mostly, people get promoted because they are high performers as individuals but the skills, competencies and mindsets needed to lead others are very different ones. The process of building these new competencies can be a long, lonely, and arduous journey.
Coaching can be a powerful means to help you or your first time managers navigate this transition.
