Play is the Highest form of Research

"Play is the highest form of research." – Albert Einstein

A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of addressing the erudite Management educators of CMS Business School, JainUniversity, on the theme: “Play to Learn: Integrating Gamification into Business Education.”

When nearly 100 Professors and Doctorates embraced the idea of #gamification with such enthusiasm, I knew the message had landed.

We explored a range of #gameelements — from points, badges, leaderboards, challenges to rewards and discussed how they can be adapted to make business management learning more interesting and impactful.

As soon as I announced a Kahoot quiz, the room lit up with energy. No hesitation, no resistance; just curiosity and competitive spirit.

“The questions were too easy!” someone called out after the quiz.
“Exactly!” I smiled. “Because the goal wasn’t to find one winner but to show how such tools can motivate participation, encourage learning, and create inclusive engagement.”

We reflected on how a game of:
• Temple Run teaches resilience — it's not about reaching an end, but navigating #challenges continuously.
• Subway Surfer is driven by #rewards like coins and power-ups.
• Among Us balances #competition and #collaboration through strategic play.

Just like in these games, identifying the #gamificationgoal helps us design meaningful learning experiences using the right elements.

After discussing sample gamification modes for specific management concepts, each participant created a gamified lesson plan tailored to their subject, demonstrating creativity, relevance, and deep understanding.

My biggest takeaway?
Their childlike curiosity, and their willingness to unlearn, learn, and relearn despite decades of experience.

It was a beautiful reminder that play is not the opposite of seriousness but a doorway to deeper engagement.
