This weekend, I met up with my close friend Jenny Karunakaran (She/Her) for a long-overdue catch-up at a local café. As we walked in, the hostess offered us a table for two, but the available spots were right in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Wanting a quieter corner to really connect, I asked if we could sit at a table for four. The hostess hesitated, explaining those tables were reserved for larger groups. Jenny gently insisted, pointing out that the café was nearly empty and we’d be happy to move if it filled up. After a moment’s pause, the hostess agreed.
We settled into a peaceful spot, enjoyed some lovely coffee, snacks, and, most importantly, some truly meaningful conversation. One highlight was a simple but powerful reminder:
"If you don't ask, the answer is always no."
This phrase, famously attributed to bestselling author Nora Roberts, has always resonated with me, but that day it took on new meaning. It’s remarkable how often we let opportunities slip by…not because they’re out of reach, but because we never voice our wishes or needs. Whether it’s asking for a better seat, seeking a new opportunity at work, or simply reaching out for support, we often hold ourselves back out of fear of rejection or the assumption that the answer will be “no.”
But here’s the truth: not asking guarantees a “no.” By taking the step to ask, we open up the possibility for a “yes”… or at the very least, a conversation that moves us forward. Sometimes, the only thing standing between us and what we want is the courage to speak up.
This small café moment was a gentle nudge to be bolder in all areas of life. The next time you find yourself hesitating, remember: asking can open doors you didn’t even know existed. Don’t let the fear of “no” keep you from pursuing what matters to you.
