When Fairness Feels Unfair: A Coaching Reflection

In a recent chemistry session, a client mentioned that fairness was one of his core values. It stood tall alongside others — but it’s fairness that this story revolves around.
Fast forward to a session last week. He was visibly disappointed that a professional opportunity he’d hoped for was given to a colleague. “It’s not fair,” he said, his tone laced with frustration.
I gently asked, “What does fair mean to you?”
He didn’t miss a beat. “Fair means… when something feels right to me. When I get what I deserve.”
We let that sit for a moment.
Then, with a curious spark, he Googled it. Here’s what he read aloud:
"Fair can have several meanings depending on the context. Generally, it refers to something that is just, reasonable, or impartial, especially when it comes to treating others equally. It can also describe something that is acceptable, appropriate, or of moderate quality."

That sparked a series of powerful questions:
-> Fair… by whose standards?
-> Was the decision objectively unfair, or simply not aligned with his hopes?
-> What might his colleague be feeling about receiving the opportunity?
-> What considerations might his manager have weighed before deciding?
As he reflected, a deeper truth surfaced: his internal definition of fairness was anchored in personal preference. Fair meant what felt just to him — not necessarily what was just overall.
That insight shifted everything.
This reminded me of a beautiful definition of Dharma that I once heard from my Indic Wisdom teacher, Krishna Prakash:
"Dharma is that which supports, sustains, and enables any system."
Fairness, then, isn’t just about outcomes. It’s about perspective. It’s about what sustains the collective — even when it doesn’t immediately favour us.
As coaches, we know that even the most cherished values can become blind spots if left unexamined. The magic lies in that moment of pause, of questioning, of redefining with awareness.
Ever wondered how your values might be shaping your expectations or emotions?
Let’s explore that together. Book a no-cost chemistry session (https://lnkd.in/gr7gMFau) — just a thoughtful, honest conversation to get started.
